Responding to our feedback
Our teacher emailed each group in depth feedback to help us improve our choreography. We spent this lesson responding to the feedback.
Here was the feedback given by our teacher:
•The moments where we all join in at different times could look smoother and more natural.
•Check that everyone is doing the motif with the same intention and no individuality.
•Work on tidying up the movement so that everybody can stay together in the group.
•Think about using facial expressions in the PTSD section and how our bodies can show the emotion.
•More exaggeration of movements so that the people at the back of the theatre can see the same as the people at the front.
•Try to keep the spontaneity when joining in with other dancers as we are pre-empting the unison section. We should almost delay our step as if our bodies are trying to catch up with the movement.
•Check the timing at the end because it wasn’t clear whether it was cannon or unison.
•Add more drama after the gunshot at the end.
•An idea was to calculate the percentage of soldiers that come home and the percentage that don’t. This could be how many of us fall to the ground at the end compared to those who remain standing.
After we made the changes to our choreography, we performed the entire 10 minutes for the first time in front of our classmates. We were given lots of feedback such as:
•It had an interesting narrative.
•The choreography didn’t feel 10 minutes.
•Our acting was natural and didn’t feel forced.
•The audience felt moved.
•We used the props well.
•The sharp movements were really effective.
•We conveyed the stimulus well.
•The music was contrasting and appropriately matched the dynamics of the movement.
•The changes of pace were powerful and intensified the next sections.
•We need to make sure our lines are completely straight, especially in the soldiers march section.
We were really happy with this feedback and now we have a plan on what to work on for the next session to improve our choreography further.
Very good blog post Caitlin. Could you elaborate on why you think it’s important to get feedback from both your peers and your teacher?
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is so important to get feedback from peers because it’s good to get an outside perspective. They will notice things that our group may not see or even think of. This can be really beneficial when cleaning/ improving our piece as it gives us lots to work on.
DeleteThe performance was oustanding! I completely agree with the comments that you received from the class. How do you plan to implement the constructive feedback? How will you know when you have been successful?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Devanshi! Most of the feedback can be implemented by spending time with my group cleaning the dance. We need to be very picky towards our choreography so that we are all in complete unison with clean formations. Once we’ve cleaned the dance, we can once again film it all the way through to see if we have been successful. We will know this if everyone is perfectly in sync with each other.
DeleteThis is an excellent blog discussing how you will use feedback you received. leading to enhance your final piece. Creating a separate blog post for this is a brilliant idea as it makes it very clear for the reader. The teacher giving your feedback mentioned that you need to work on the timing of your end section. How do you think that a more specific, together use of timing will enhance the audiences opinions on this final section? Will it make the overall impact of the dance more dramatic?
ReplyDeleteThank you Storm! The ending of our choreography is based on a minutes silence and showing respect! When watching real soldiers doing this, they are in complete unison. We wanted to have the same effect. This will make the choreography have more of an emotional impact on the audience and give closure to our piece.
